Life’s Journey: Part 4 by Eustacia Cutler

I carried home with me Aunt Ruby’s parting advice: “If Temple is to survive, then so must you. But as yourself, not your mother’s idea of who she’d like you to be.”
But I wasn’t yet sure who that “self” was. I was the first college-educated woman in my family—also in the neighborhood where I lived. I’d attended classes filled with vets on the G.I. Bill of rights. Not college kids, but men in their late 20’s who’d left pieces of themselves on various battlefronts. Men who’d faced the worst, were afraid of nothing, and weren’t about to swallow Harvard whole. I’d watched them interrupt government lectures, challenge the professor, question his theories, even his facts. I’d seen their crutches, their empty sleeves. I’d caught their fever, their fervor. They were my idea of the future.
Yet here I was, living in a suburban community—though serene and temptingly pretty, it never seemed quite real. Would this be
where Temple would thrive? Where I would thrive? The wounded vets had no choice. They were drafted. At least I have choice.

That’s a plus. So I’ll give it a try. If it doesn’t work I’ll try something else.
No answers. Just choices.
